Surface area is how much space each face of the shape takes up. Volume is how much space there is inside an object. You would use surface area to find out how much wrapping paper, carpet you need. You would use volume to find out how much of a liquid you need to fill a container.
In a rectangular cuboid, all angles are right angles, and opposite faces of a cuboid are equal. It is also called a right rectangular prism. (1) The measurable features of a right rectangular prism are 6 faces, 12 edges, and 1volume. There are also 8 vertices but they are just points and cannot be measured. (2) Units of measure for faces are square something, like square centimeters (cm^2), square meters (m^2). Edges are measures as centimeters or meters because they are just line segments. Volume is measured with cubic centimeters cm^3, cubic meters (m^3) or simply liters (l). The differences come from the fact they have different dimensions. Edges have a single dimension which is why it has a single unit like centimeter. Faces are two dimensional therefore they are expressed as square of something, i.e. length time length. Volume is three dimensional like cubic meters m^3 or more convenient liter (l). (3) You may want use a single dimension or length if you are building a casket for example; width of which seems to be rather standard. When you are trying to fit drywalls on a wall in your room you may use the size of surface area so that you would know how much materiel you want to use. If you want to store a liquid like water you may want to know the volume so you can tell how much water you can hold.(yahoo)
