It seems that Mecca was a worship center for a host of pagan gods and the various worshipers provided a great tourist income for the city of Mecca. When Muhammad tried to destroy the pagan idols and introduce monotheism, he was f*cking with their source of income and they wanted to kill him, so he beat feet to a friendlier place
