It is a Java applet, and the web browser nowadays considers it unsafe and do not run it by default. You need to find and open the Java Control Panel, find the security settings and permit execution of all applets from http://ocw.mit.edu. Restart the browser after that. The Secant Approximation applet does work with the latest Java 8 on a Mac.
