Before they used indulgences would be based off of pilgrimage. So people would go to pilgrimage to erase their sins. Many people did not want to take the time to go on a pilgrimage. But then everything became based on money. The church needed money so they invented a new type of indulgences where people had to pay to erase their sins. It became easier for the church to get money.
