If f(x) = x + 5, what does f(8) represent? The value if x when (x + 5) = 8 The value of 8f(x) when x = 8 The value of f(x) when (x + 5) = 8 The value of (x + 5) when x = 8

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

What do you think?

Mehek (mehek14):

That is easy

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

It may be easy for you, but they may be clueless.

Mehek (mehek14):

f(x) = y so technically f(8) is the same as 8 = x+5

OpenStudy (adamaero):

It's all about inputs and outputs...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Function_(mathematics) (see the picture)

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

That is incorrect @Mehek14 . I will give an example so I am not giving the answer away. f(x) = 2x +7. Find the value for f(4). f(4) = 2(4) + 7

Mehek (mehek14):

oh yea forgot about the x

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Therefore, f(4) for that expression is f(4) = 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

Mehek (mehek14):

I didn't put it so that the person doesn't get confused by the answer choices

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

With that example, what do you think @hiiguess? ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b?

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Not quite, for f(8), all you do is substitute in 8 for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d then

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yep :) Good job

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Could you please close this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
