You need to read the excerpt and try to imagine what Poe is trying to tell you. The words that he has chosen to use are a huge clue as to what tone he is trying to set.
What do the words pallor,ghastly and quaver point to. Think about why a voice would quaver (which means shake), if he was afraid then his voice would shiver with fear but the excerpt rules that out.
What would cause fear in someone;s voice.

If you read what I wrote then you will see that I am directing the poster to use his critical thinking skills in order to come to the right answer. Simply asking him what he thinks the answer is wont allow him to use what is in side the text to come to the correct conclusion.
I know the answer but isn't the point of this site to help others find them with
