Solve for x: the quantity of x plus 4 over 3 = 2

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Do you know how to write this out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its (x+4) _______ = 2 3

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Rightt, do you not know how to solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought i did but i got it wrong.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Alright, what did you try?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 1.2 and its not it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i figured out what i did wrong

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

You get rid of the fraction first, multiply both sides by 3 :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i did x+4 which becomes 5x because you put a 1 infront of the x

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

And you got x+4=6? That would give you \(\color{blue}{x=2}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh i see what i did. thanks so much!!!

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Ohhh, you don't add x and 4, they are different components. You can only them if they both had an x. And you're welcome, glad to help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ive done so much math today my brain is fried!! ;)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Haha, sorry to hear that, well good luck ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
