Why might filmmakers have chosen to produce movies that drew on America's historical past?

Perhaps to inform others of history, since some may find reading a history book boring, watching a movie would give a different affect.

For two reasons:
1) To educate people about America's history and hardships.
2) To make money since the public is interested in those type of movies.
