OpenStudy (xcecex):

I need sum1 to check my answer please :) Baird and Lon earned points for the number of books and magazines they read over the summer. The average of the two boys’ points can be expressed as (5.4p+5)+(8+3.2p) Divided by 2, , where p represents the number of points earned per book. What is the average when p = 3? My answer is 19.4

OpenStudy (xcecex):

@Haichi

OpenStudy (haichi):

Yeah about 20

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Im going to out 19.4 as my answer to be on the safe side cuz it doesnt say estimate xD

OpenStudy (xcecex):

With*

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Okay >_> Suh i haz one moar question :l

OpenStudy (mathmate):

The question has no brackets. If the question were f(p)=((5.4p+5)+(8+3.2p))/2, then when p=3, f(p)=19.4. But the question says: (5.4p+5)+(8+3.2p) Divided by 2 which literally means, according PEMBAS, (5.4p+5)+((8+3.2p) /2), that would give a different answer.

OpenStudy (xcecex):

O_O

OpenStudy (xcecex):

What? That makes no sense. I followed pemdas its parenthesis first AND thats wat i did. I did what's inside the parenthesis and i added them and divided it by two.

OpenStudy (xcecex):

@Haichi Do u know what @mathmate is talking about?

OpenStudy (haichi):

yes

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Okay sum one please explain step by step -.-

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Haichi ur here u can help >:l

OpenStudy (haichi):

ok xD

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Im so bad a math i swear to jebus -.- Alright so what did @mathmate mean by "according PEMBAS, (5.4p+5)+((8+3.2p) /2), that would give a different answer."?

OpenStudy (haichi):

Pemdas= Parenthese Exponets Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

OpenStudy (xcecex):

I know that :l Did i not follow it right? Hold on let me redo it.

OpenStudy (xcecex):

@Mateaus PLEASE ANYONE JAST HALP MEEEEEE

OpenStudy (xcecex):

@Haichi I should just give up right? ~_~

OpenStudy (haichi):

Sure y not

OpenStudy (xcecex):

SUCH A GREAT SPORT XD

OpenStudy (haichi):

xD

OpenStudy (xcecex):

I CANT GIVE UP I GTTA FINISH THIS

OpenStudy (haichi):

ok

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Okay....so i need to focus >_< Alright so 5.4*3+5

OpenStudy (haichi):

yes and that equals to wat?

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Uhm 21.2?

OpenStudy (xcecex):

WAIT NO ITS 43.2

OpenStudy (xcecex):

u have to add 5+3 first and THEN multiply it by 5.4 right?

OpenStudy (haichi):

no

OpenStudy (haichi):

Multiply first then add

OpenStudy (xcecex):

-.- So it is 21.2?

OpenStudy (haichi):

yes

OpenStudy (xcecex):

OMG I PASSED :D 80% is good enough for me XD

OpenStudy (haichi):

XD

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@XceceX congratulations. and thank you @haichi for the excellent help!

OpenStudy (xcecex):

Thank :D @mathmate

OpenStudy (xcecex):

thanks*

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@XceceX @Haichi did most of the explaining. I think she deserves a medal. You only have to click on the blue/brown medal at the right of her posts.

OpenStudy (haichi):

@mathmate It is ok I understand u think ima girl by mai pfp but thats my gf Im a guy :D

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@haichi Sorry I made assumptions, and the wrong one! :( I'll be more careful in the future!

OpenStudy (haichi):
