What is the meaning of "The symbol of the north is a pen ; the symbol of the south is the bludgeon"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have any ideas of what it might mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I feel it might mean that the North was weak, while the South was strong? Just not sure if it’s right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, that's correct, because a pen is small and weak, whereas a bludgeon is a thick stick with a heavy end, that's used as a weapon. That could also mean that the South was better at combat.

Oh ok, thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any time! I'm happy to help
