Noise Pollution by Emmanuel Beltran, environmental scientist When you think of pollution, you probably think of air pollution or water pollution, but have you ever considered noise as a type of pollution? It’s true, there is such a thing as noise pollution. Just like other types of pollution, it affects human health and well-being. Before discussing noise pollution any further, it is interesting to note the origins of the word noise. The word is believed to come from the Latin word nausea, which means “disgust, annoyance, or discomfort.” This origin relates directly to what is meant by noise pollution. Put simply, noise pollution can be any noise that is bothersome to any individual. Traffic, airplanes, jet skis, garbage trucks, construction equipment, lawn equipment, and stereos are all examples of sources of noise that can be considered pollution. These varying sources of noise pollution can be a serious problem. Noise pollution is transient. This means that once the pollution stops, it no longer affects the environment. This is not the case for things that affect our air and water, like chemicals. In addition, it is highly subjective. For example, the teenager who turns his radio up full blast at 11:00 p.m. obviously doesn’t think of his noise as pollution. But the couple next door with a newborn baby would more than likely think of the noise as pollution. Finally, other kinds of pollution are measurable. But even though noise levels themselves can be measured, it is hard to tell how much noise is too much noise.
A. The problems of noise pollution are very similar to other types of pollution. B. The most serious problem of noise pollution is that it’s highly subjective because it’s not measurable. C. The problem of noise pollution is measurable because noise levels can be measured. D. The problem of noise pollution differs from air and water pollution in a few aspects.
