Two ships leave from the same port at 11 :30 a.m. If one sails due east at 20 miles per hour and the other due south at 15 miles per hour , how many miles apart are ships at 2 :30 p.m ?

inverse tangent of the two sides to get the angle, then (sine of the angle)=(opposite side)/(length of hypotenuse). rearrange to get (length of opposite side)/(sine of angle)=(length of the hypotenuse)
