For the following set of scores, idenitfy which measure would provide the best description of central tendancy and explain your answer. "0,30,31,32.5,33.5,34,35,37,38"

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well what would you say about the score of 0... when comparing it to all the other scores?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a outlier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would think that Median would be the best choice since it doesnt depend on a interval scale.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

that's correct. When you have an outlier, the median is the best measure of central tendency.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain when the median would provide a better measurement of centeral tendancy the mean

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

sure, mode is the best for categorical data. when you have quantitative data you need mean or median. the outlier of 0 will have a signficant effect on the mean... it drags it down from the true middle.. to check find the mean of the data with 0 and 9 scores then the mean without zero and 8 scores... because 0 has a negative influence... the physical middle, median, is the best measure in this question. mean is best when the data is condensed and outliers don't exist.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you describe a circumstance where the mode would provide a better measure of central tendency than the mean or the median?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

sure.... what is the most popular music genre that people listen to... the data is tallied into categories... rock, pop, hip hop, etc
