Recently, the Texas Junior College Teachers Association annual conference was held in Austin. At the time a taxi ride in Austin was $1.75 for the first 1/5 of a mile and $0.25 for each additional 1/5 of a mile. If the distance from one of the convention hotels to the airport is 9.4 miles, how much will it cost to take a taxi from that hotel to the airport? It'll cost $ to get to the airport.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First multiply 1/5 * 9.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.88

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, so 1.88 miles cost $1.75. Now Subtract 9.4 - 1.88

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7.52

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, so that is the miles we have left over. It says each additional 1/5 mile is 0.25 1/5 mile was 1.88 So divide 7.52 / 1.88

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, so we have 4 additional 1/5 miles. What's 4 * 0.25?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, so the rest of the way only costs $1 What's 1 + 1.75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.74

Um, check again.
