Evolutionary biology:
Studying archaea can help us to understand evolutionary lineages better. When their ribosomal RNA was sequenced, it became obvious that Archaea bore no close relationship to the bacteria and were, in fact, more closely related to the eukaryotes (including ourselves!) Archaea are now classified in their own domain.

Cleaning up the environment:
Archaea may also be enlisted to aid in cleaning up contaminated sites, e.g., petroleum spills.

Their metabolic use of arsenic:
This has serious consequences in some parts of the world, because the process converts the arsenic to a more toxic form that is also more likely to remain dissolved in water. This can be dangerous to humans.
