Angela Davis-Political Activist Did you know that America has imprisoned more of its own people by percentage than any other society in recorded history? Neither did I until I started researching acclaimed political activist, Angela Davis. Angela played a major role in the fight for equality for African Americans, women, and even fights against the unjust prison system in our country. She was persecuted for her beliefs in associations. She was even jailed for a time but after being acquitted she continued her work to improve life, as we know it. Born in Birmingham Alabama on January 26,1944, Angela Yvonne Davis Angela was raised by her two parents Sallye and Frank Davis. Growing up her mother was a national officer and leading organizer of the Southern Negro Congress, which was strongly influenced by the communist party. This influenced Angela as she pursued an education, earning a scholarship to Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. After already being introduced to communism and socialism she became “active”. After already having multiple study groups broken up by the police she came back from studying abroad to be interviewed by the FBI for being at a communist sponsored rally. This would only be the beginning of her trials brought on by her associations. On august 7,1970 tragedy struck when Jonathan Jackson a 17 year old African American boy took over a courtroom at gun point. As a result a judge and three black men were killed that day. Also Angela Davis was charge with aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder. After a jury decided that the guns being registered in her name was insufficient evidence she was acquitted of all charges and continued her work with even more passion. She went on to become a professor at UC Santa Cruz, receive multiple awards including the Lenin peace prize and even ran for vice president twice. She continues her activism and speaks on a lot of the civil rights issues we see happening today including Trayvon martin. At the age of 71 she’s still fighting to abolish the prison industrial complex and implement new more effective strategies that actually address the issues at hand. In general Angela Davis continues to be a prominent figure in the struggle to improve the quality of life for all. The most important thing I gained in my research on Angela Davis is this; Inspiration. Through all her trials and tribulations she never gave up her ideals or gave up on her goals. After much reading I have to agree with her view on the PIC in that incarceration will only worsen most of the problems it’s supposed to deal with. I can only hope that ill have the same perseverance and determination in reaching my goals as this woman did in everything she did.
