In what way did imperialism hurt rather than help European nations?

It prevented the Islamic Turks during the Ottoman Empire from being able to extend Islam into Austria as well as Hungary and Romania. Imperialism on the part of the Austrians stopped the Turks right at Vienna, thereby denying Islam to the rest of Western Europe.
