Jefferson was a strong supporter of the French Revolution and played a major role in its early days. He soured on France after Napoleon became its dictator in 1799.[258] After 1774 he always distrusted Britain as an enemy of Republicanism. He said of the Wars of the French revolution, "The liberty of the whole world was depending on the issue of the contest".[259] Jefferson once argued that America would become the world's great "empire of liberty"—that is, the model for democracy and republicanism.
