A soccer ball is kicked toward the goal. The height of the ball is modeled by the function h(t) = -16t2 + 48t where t equals the time in seconds and h(t) represents the height of the ball at time t seconds. What is the axis of symmetry, and what does it represent?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the path of the ball follows a parabolic curve. The axis of symmetry represents the displacement of the ball from the starting point when the ball is at maximum height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that, but how long will i take to reach it's maximum height, and fall back down to the grown? @cwrw238

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

if you equate to zero and solve you'll get the times when its stars and when it reaches the ground -16t^2 + 48t = 0 t(-16t + 48) = 0

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the axis of symmetry will be a half of the time taken for the whole flight - at this time it will be at maximum height

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

so t = 0 and 16t = 48
