Treasure Seekers by Bethany Dowd 1 Ron cranked up the volume on his earphones as he tried to drown out the sound of the kids playing in the water nearby. He sat at the beach on a chair under an umbrella. Several days of riding in the car with his family had been strenuous for Ron. He was relieved his parents had given him most of the day to do as he pleased. He decided to explore the shoreline on his own. 2 Ron shoved his towel into his backpack and started walking along the edge of the water. He kicked up some sand and noticed something sparkling near his toe. He bent over to pick it up, and everything in his backpack fell out and into the shallow water. He tried to grab his towel and MP3 player, but they hit the water before Ron could catch them. Pushing the soggy towel back into his backpack, he looked around to make sure no one saw what had just happened. 3 As Ron took another step, he saw a flicker of light in the sand again. He grasped his bag tightly this time and knelt down to investigate. Glistening in the sunlight, the object appeared to be a glass bottle although it was still partially buried in the sand. He dug his fingers into the sand and pulled it out, substantiating that it was indeed a glass bottle. The sunlight revealed a piece of paper inside the bottle. Ron tugged at the cork that kept the note sealed in the bottle, and then he pried the note out through the bottle's narrow neck. The note read: "No one else knows, except the one who finds this note; the treasure that awaits. The time is now, so do not hesitate." 4 A map below the message gave directions for finding the treasure. The starting point was the same beach Ron was walking along. Ron checked the time on his watch and realized that he only had 30 minutes before he had to meet up with his family in their hotel room. Based on the coordinates given on the map, Ron felt confident that he could find the treasure and be back to the hotel room in time. He had no time to waste! 5 The map's directions took Ron away from the beach and onto a narrow walkway past the hotel. He neared a busy road with several tourists and bustling taxis. Ron waited patiently as the crosswalk signal turned to let him cross, and then he looked to make sure the road was clear. As Ron bolted across the road, he noticed that a store had a symbol that matched the symbol on the note. Could this be the home of the treasure that I'm desperately hoping to find? he thought. He felt a little nauseous, and his legs turned to rubber as he moved closer to the store. 6 Ron slowly entered the store and found himself right in the middle of a tourist gift shop. He felt like a fool. No treasure was here. Just then, Ron's watch beeped as a reminder that it was time to meet his family back in their hotel room. If he did not leave now, Ron would not make it back to the hotel in time. So, he turned toward the exit door and spotted his sister in the doorway. They made eye contact with each other and began talking about their day. 7 After some conversation, Ron and his sister realized they had both found messages in bottles and were both in search of hidden treasures! After comparing their papers, they noticed the print on the back of each of the messages. Each of the messages had an advertisement for the gift shop. 8 Feeling tricked, Ron and his sister walked disappointingly toward the exit when a store clerk stopped them and asked for the piece of paper. Apparently, their messages were worth a free T-shirt. Ron and his sister were excited to receive a nice keepsake to take home from their family vacation. A T-shirt may not have been the treasure they were hunting, but their quest gave Ron and his sister a great story to tell their family about when they returned to the hotel.
1. What is the theme of the passage? People will not trust you if you tell their secrets. Be careful when helping someone who is in trouble. The best vacations are those that are unplanned. Do not count on something before it happens. Next Question
