(1) Acoma is the name of a pueblo that is almost 1,000 years old. (2) It claims to be the oldest inhabited village in the United States. (3) It is located high on a sandstone rock in the desert of New Mexico. (4) There is no running water or electricity in the village. (5) All water must be hauled up the steep sides of the rock.
(6) Because of the pueblo's location 365 feet above the ground, the Acomas were fairly safe from their enemies. (7) In 1598, the Spanish governor and 70 of his men attacked the village after the Acomas had killed thirteen Spaniards who tried to steal their grain. (8) Acoma was nearly destroyed. (9) After the attack, the Acomas agreed to build a mission as a condition of peace.
