A Virtual Snapshot of Life
1 People say that the Internet is getting too big for itself. Some even describe it as a "garbage heap" of information, much of which comes from unreliable sources. However, no one ever said that the Internet was supposed to include only the most current facts and information. To me, the great thing about the Internet is that it can hold everything including social networking sites, full texts of classic novels, and political blogs. The Internet is a record of what our society thinks and feels. 2 That is why I do not agree with those who think that the Internet needs to be cleaned up. If people were to delete all of the dead links and out-of-date information on the Internet, a limited picture of society would be left. For instance, let's say a rock concert happened on a particular date last year. If someone took down the Web site after the concert was over, there would be no online record that the concert had happened! If that happened with other events once they were out of date, people would no longer have a true reflection of the culture and era. Right now, if a person enters "2005 events" in Google's search engine, over one billion hits would be listed! This information may be outdated, but taken together, it gives a pretty good snapshot of life in 2005. If the Internet were cleaned up, society would lose much of its history. 3 Some people like to make "time capsules," which are containers that are filled with items from the present time period and then are buried. When they are opened many years later, people can get a glimpse of life from the past. The Internet is like a giant time capsule. Instead of holding just a few items, the Internet has everything that people have posted since the early 1990s, when it started becoming widely used. Left just the way it is, the Internet will be of tremendous value to future generations.
