The Khmers originally came from which country?

I read a book called China's Tibet and it mentioned a small history of the Mon-Khmer people being the indigenous of the Central Tibet and then later the Qiang (Tibetans) came and drove them to South East Asia and some got assimilated in the Tibetan population. I believe the Mon-Khmer people are from Tibet.
