[Plz Help- Reward- Medal and fan] A year ago, Jean was three times as old as Midhun. A year later, he was twice as old as Midhun. How old are Jean and Midhun?

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

J = 3M J + 1 = 2M + 1 Those are the equations I have so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, currently it's: J = 2M

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Then, if you subtract 1 from both sides, you get J = 2M

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe you subtract 1 in your first equation: J - 1 = 3M - 1

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Wait, now I'm confused....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It says A YEAR AGO. Now it says A YEAR AFTER. So I'm guessing 'a year after' is present

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

But if you add 1 to both sides, it becomes J = 3M

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A year later*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, I have options : a) 16 and 6. b) 7 and 3. c) 8 and 4. d) None. @iGreen. @sleepyjess

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

So either way, it cancels to be J = 3M or J = 2M....

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Ok, we can substitute in those options and see if any work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So these are the equations I think are correct: J - 1 = 3M - 1 J = 2M

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

The only ones that are J = 2M is option C, so substitute that into the first equation and see if it works :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hate these stupid 'age' questions >.>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ikr @iGreen. -_-

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

ginyf....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks a lot guys @iGreen. @sleepyjess Idk who to medal now , I have fanned both tho. c:

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

haha it's fine :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I guess you can sue your school for that stupid question :P

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

We have both come to a conclusion that it is unsolvable.

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Because no matter what, if you add 1 to both sides on that first equation, you get J + 1 - 1 = 3M + 1 - 1, which means that J = 3M, so 2M = 3M. That would only work if M = 0... which isn't an option.

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

But could you close this? :)
