Youth and young adulthood are the times when people are most liable to starting tobacco use. Young people are more exposed and more influenced by advertising than adults. They are also more eager to take risks, even with their own health. When smoking is described as a social median among others who are seen as cool, sophisticated, or stubborn teens more likely respond by copying the behavior and trying cigarettes themselves. If their friends smoke, or their relatives smoke, they are more likely to smoke themselves.
