Allison has a poster that is 15 in by 18 in. What will the dimensions of the poster be if she scales it down by a factor of one-third ? my answer is 5in by 6in ...double checking

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Correct. You divide each dimension by 3.

Thanks @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me with another post i had put up?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure

A scale drawing of a bedroom is shown below. The scale is 1 : 30. Show your work to determine the area of the room in square feet. Length is 3in and width is 4in

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The "1:30" means you multiply each dimension on the paper by 30 to get the actual dimension Example: the length on paper is 3 in, but in reality it is 3*30 = 90 inches

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Once you know the dimensions of the actual room, you can compute the area.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then 30*3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how I got the new length?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4*30

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep, the new width is 3*40 = 120 inches |dw:1424147706050:dw|
