Suppose for some reason you have to walk in bare feet across a short distance covered by broken glass. Would you want the pieces of glass to be large or small?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Large. If the pieces are larger than my foot, my foot wouldn't have to touch the sharp sides and get cut.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what about p=f/a?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

That equation holds up my statement. When area is smaller and force is the same, pressure is larger.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt you want less pressure? So there is no penetration

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Yes, you want less pressure, which means you need larger area.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm i just submitted this question online, and the correct answer was small...???

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Really??? I would argue that with the teacher. Doesn't make sense to me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok will do:) thanks
