Here is my finished fictional narrative (with lots of dialogue). What do you think?
Exploring. That was the life of Elizabeth "Lizzy" Wilson and her husband, George Wilson. It could be in the forest, jungle, or the wilderness; they loved the adventure of discovering a new place. The two had been to many places all over the world, researching new areas, animals, and natives. Little did they know that their most harrowing adventure awaited them right near their own hometown! George Wilson is a 28 year old Wildlife Biologist. He's very tall with an athletic build. He looks very scholarly in his glasses which set off his sky blue eyes. He always carries a backpack which is usually stocked with notepads, pencils, how-to books, maps, and animal identifier books. Elizabeth Wilson is a 26 year old Botanist. She has bright green eyes, which are beautifully framed with her dark purple glasses. She always carries a camera around her neck, which she uses to take pictures of all kinds of different plants. She is shy around people, so her adventurous side comes in handy. George and Lizzy made their home in Quilcene, Washington. It's located just a short drive from the Olympic National Park. With all their adventures, they have never explored this Temperate Rainforest so close to home. “Do you want to go explore that rainforest we researched last night?” Lizzy asked George. “Sure!” George said. “I’ll go get the backpack and the equipment.” “Okay. I’ll go get the camera” Lizzy said happily. “There’s nothing like another adventure!” “Yeah” George agreed as he walked in, holding a green and yellow backpack. “I think I have everything we need; the notebook, pencil, maps, flashlight, animal identifier book, compass, bags, and bottled water. I also managed to fit in a tarp just in case.” “Thanks.” Lizzy said as she put her camera around her neck. “Well, what are we waiting for? We’ve got a rainforest to explore!” Lizzy and George laughed as they made their way to their car. As George and Elizabeth reached Olympic National Park, they saw the Western Red Cedars towering above them. Then they noticed birds, such as the Crossbill and the Pine Siskin singing happily and fluttering about through the wet, cool air. Insects were buzzing noisily throughout the air; beetles, flies, mosquitoes, butterflies of all kinds and colors, and many other insects. The dark and damp forest floor was covered in plants, including Sword Ferns, Pacific Rhododendron, and the Devil’s-Club. There were so many animals crawling around the forest floor, which included the Townsend’s Chipmunk, Pacific Giant Salamander, and porcupines. George and Lizzy took it all in, taking notes and pictures of what they saw. They ventured into the forest a bit doing the same as they went. “Find anything new?” Lizzy asked. “Not so far” George replied, disappointed. “Don’t sound so disappointed already, George!” exclaimed Lizzy. “We still have an entire rainforest to explore!” “Yeah,” George agreed, “your right.” Suddenly, the bush behind them rustled as something dashed into it. George and Lizzy gasped. They spun around to see what jumped into the bush. What they did see was a pair of glowing, yellow eyes. “Oh, no...” breathed Lizzy. As she and George backed away very slowly, George accidentally stepped on a pile of dead leaves that crunched under his foot. Now the creature came forward enough for them to see what it was. “It’s a m…mountain l…lion!!!!!!” George stuttered as he and Lizzy trembled as the ferocious beast showed off its set of large teeth. They ran as fast as their legs could carry them. They ran and ran and ran until they finally tripped and fell. They turned to see if the mountain lion was still there, but luckily it wasn’t. “Where is it?” panted George. “I don’t know” replied Lizzy, who was still shaking. “I was pretty sure it was chasing us.” “Well, I don’t know about you, but I think we better head home” George said. “Certainly” confirmed Lizzy. “You put a compass in your backpack, right? “Yeah” George replied. “I’ll get it out.” George pulled out a compass from his backpack, which had fallen off him when he fell. “Here it is” he said relieved. “Great!” smiled Lizzy. “I don’t think anything else could go wrong now.” George’s face fell. “Er...well...um...about that...” George stammered. “Oh, no” cried Lizzy. “Now what?” “Well, dear, the compass...it doesn’t...here, it speaks for itself” George handed the compass to Lizzy. “Oh, dear” Lizzy said as she looked at the compass. The compass’s hand was going around in circles and occasionally spun the opposite way and repeated itself. “We need another plan. Let me think of one.” “Okay. I’ll look for anything in my backpack that might help us” George said as he started rummaging through the backpack’s contents. “I can’t find anything.” “That’s alright,” Lizzy said, “because I’ve got a plan.” “Fantastic!” George said. “What is it?” “First, we need to walk downhill. That should lead us to a river. Then we can follow the river which should bring us to a town of some sort” Lizzy said with authority. “Good thinking!” George said. “Lead the way.” “Okay. Come on!” Lizzy exclaimed. They made their way downhill. After traveling a while, they realized they had drank all their water and ate all their food. They also noticed they were hungry. Fortunately, since Lizzy was a botanist, she began foraging for edible and non-poisonous foods. At last she had found some salmonberries along with some blackberries for them to eat. “Here,” Lizzy said as she held out a handful of berries to George, “we can eat these. How about we stuff our little bags with berries?” “Good idea” George said as he pulled out little plastic bags from his backpack. “Here” George held a bag out as Lizzy poured berries into it. “That should be good for now” Lizzy said. “We can always get more if we run out of them.” “Yeah. How long do you think until we find a river?” George asked Lizzy. “I’m getting thirsty.” “Any time now” Lizzy reassured George. “I bet if we pick up the pace a little, we’ll find one in no time!” About a minute later, they could hear the sound of water nearby. “Water!” they shouted. When they came upon the river, they saw it had crystal clear water filled with fish and perfect for drinking. They stooped down and filled their water bottle with water. They went along the river quietly, but quickly hoping to see an opening in the rainforest any time now. About what seemed like an hour later, they saw a faint light way ahead. “We are almost there!” Lizzy exclaimed. “Almost home!” However, when they did reach the light, it wasn’t anywhere near where they first started! When they reached the town at last, they knew it looked nothing like their own town. “What are we going to do, now?!?” George asked, panicking. “We will just ask around” Lizzy said. They walked farther into the town and asked a woman who was taking a picture of a statue. “Excuse me, ma’am,” Lizzy said politely, “can you tell me what town I am in?” “Of course!” the woman said as she put down her camera. “Your are in the town of Quinault.” “Thank you so much, ma’am!” Lizzy said happily. “No problem” the woman said. “Are you lost?” “Yes” Lizzy said. “I am from Quilcene. My husband and I decided to explore the rainforest, but we got lost.” “Oh!” the woman said, surprised. “How funny! I live in Quilcene, too! I was going to head back anyways. Would you like me to take you to your car?” George and Lizzy looked at each other. “Yes, please!” they said together. “This is my husband, George. My name is Lizzy” Lizzy said. “Well, I am pleased to meet you, George and Lizzy. My name is Susan” the woman said kindly. “Well, let’s get going!” Lizzy, George, and Susan were off, back to Quilcene. “Here you are!” Susan said. “Thank you so much!!!” Lizzy and George thanked Susan. They got out, ran to their car, and drove home. By the time they reached their house, it was already 5 o’clock in the evening and they had left at 5 o’clock in the morning! “We’re home!” Lizzy and George hugged each other.
