continental climate is the climate of extremes, that is to say that it is extremely hot in summers and extremely cold in winters. generally this climate is experienced in areas away from major water bodies.
maritime climate is a moderate climate, where due to the moderating effect of the water bodies, the temperature is in between 25-35 degree celcius and it generally receives rain almost throughout the year. it is experienced near the water bodies or coastal plains

the indian ocean is divided in to parts by the Indian peninsula. the west branch of the indian ocean is known as the arabian sea and the east branch as the bay of bengal.
the trade winds also get divided and form the same two branches
