Okay i am getting really sick of open studies sensor. Like i get why its there and thats cool and all but the thing is that i cant tag certain people because there user name has an inappropriate word in it. Also if im trying to put someones name in my response or question or answer or whatever it doesnt always let me because there name has an inappropriate word in it. but the thing is its not bad thats there name!!!!
Actually many trolls and spammers make accounts with bad names to wreak havoc on OpenStudy. It looks like they did a good job considering how you have now noticed it. It is actually a good thing how OpenStudy changes the words. It helps when people try to cuss in the chats or questions. There are not many users with a bad name so it shouldn't be a problem. If you want help on your question you don't have to tag. You can instead message the link of your question to the user. And I doubt that bad word will be someones name. It can be their username but not their real name. Exceptions are possible. Overall we can evaluate that when OpenStudy changes the bad words it would lead to a greater good. Have a good day and keep hooting on OpenStudy!
I wrote so much.

@confluxepic okay dont get me wrong i totally understand why there's a sensor. But what i dont understand is why openstudy didnt sensor the usernames so they couldnt even make them to begin with? Also when i say names im mostly talking about history. I have asked several history questions with the name that is sometimes used for William. Also the name of male parts. That is a very common name in history. Also that word tends to be in some peoples last names actually a lot of peoples last names and i find it very frustrating that i cant put down someones name
Just a few minutes ago. The person had a bad name. http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/54e4be1ee4b0aba126e8210e I understand like when people try writing John Hanwingspan.
But the problem is not that bad. The bad outweighs the good.
I actually disagree. i understand peoples beliefs on not having bad words and this isnt my website so i respect there decision but i dont have problems with using curse words. I'm a writer so i see them as just adjectives. I dont understand what makes them bad words. Its all on how u use them and the same goes for really any word. Thats my personal opinion
@confluxepic
Young children that sneak up on this website would soon learn the cuss words if there was no filter. It can always affect them in a bad way.
@ispike
well first off its not meant for them so this website shouldn't be designed for little kids unless they want them to be involved too. Also the majority of little kids if not all have heard curse words before. And personally i dont think it matters. Society tells us that theyre bad words so they obviously are but truth is theyre just words and i dont see how they could damage a child. I think children wont know how to properly use the words so they shouldnt say them until theyre old enough to understand but i dont think it would damage them. Like i said before this is my personal opinion and i respect the site for them sticking to there opinion and doing what they feel is best but just because ii respect it doesnt mean that i have to agree with it @confluxepic
I respect your arguments. This site isn't allowed for kids but they always come onto it. The moderators can't tell the specific age of a user. So we don't have power over it all. Cuss words can damage some kids. Note how I said some. I understand that you don't agree with it. Your arguments may change something in the future. It's always good to question the authorities.
I just realized you meant censor and not sensor... lol
You know that even though it filters their name when you ag them, that they still get the notification, right?
ag? and lol opps my bad im so dyslexic lol
@thesmartone
They are trying to improve this, I heard. Making it to where it only censors certain words, bu not names and stuff. Hope for this ASAp
Its called a blacklist I believe (the words that are being censored)
yea that would be good and at least theyre trying to fix it
I do not remember if that is one of the things that made the development list or not. My suggestion was a white list in front of the black list. White listed words would be things like Hanc-ock, shi-ta-ki (mushrooms) and so on. This would prevent their being munged. I also suggested that the munging be a random string made up of all the !@#$%^&* characters with a random length of 3 to 8 characters. Then it would not be as obvious which bad word someone used.
I don't like vulgarity and gutter language on OS. This is a family site. Get a vocabulary and anyone can make a trenchant point. Such as: I don't know who the "hello" thinks this is a good idea but I'd like to kick his "asymptote."
and then you get things like Emily wingspaninson or sales associate and that just kinda screws stuff up
Oh. Huh. It didn't filter associate. Nice.
Yes. They are able to white list, which is why I think they need to add more to it.
