In Japan, the smell of the burning fireplace was often hidden by incense. The traditional tea masters kept the incense in special boxes and used them before guests arrived. Nonomura Ninsei, a famous potter, was creative in how he changed the styles of the boxes used by the Japanese tea masters of the late 1600s. The picture of the rooster shows a box designed by Nonomura Ninsei. Beside the rooster, is an example of the traditional box used for holding incense. The rooster design is an example of how all Japanese artists liked to paint. how art can change cultural practices. how new artists make fun of traditional art. how Japanese incense boxes were hidden.
