if you add them.....
9x+7y=0 and since it's 0 that must cancel out each other..... so you get
9x=-7y
x=-7/9 y
and so you plug it into one of the equations....
-7/9 y + 3y = -1
-4/9 y = -1
-4y = 9
-y = 9/4
y= -9/4
or
y= -2.25
and you plug this back into the simplified equation... which is
x=-7/9y
x=-9/4 ( -7/9)
x= 7/4
or
x= 1.75
