Colton solved an equation incorrectly, as shown below: Step 1: x − 13 = 26 Step 2: x = 26 − 13 Step 3: x = 39 Which statement best explains why Step 2 is incorrect in Colton’s solution? He did not subtract 13 from 26. He did not multiply 26 by 13. He did not add 13 to 26. He did not divide 26 by 13.

so taking a term to the other side of an equation, what is the basic change that has to be made? ? its something with the sign, isnt it?

OpenStudy (igreen):

x - 13 = 26 We want to get 'x' by itself..so we have to get rid of 13. 13 is being subtracted from 'x', so to get rid of it, we have to do the opposite. And what's the opposite of subtraction?

OpenStudy (holly00d1248):

@rohitmathew is right he did everything right except his sign you supposed to do the inverse operation of -13 and he did not the inverse(opposite) is not -13 its +13 make sense

@iGreen addition

OpenStudy (igreen):

Yes, so we ADD 13 to both sides, not subtract. So what should your answer be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he didn't add 13 to 26

OpenStudy (igreen):

Yep, you got it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you @iGreen

we have 5 fingers on both hands..lets add that 5 + 5 = 10 now im taking one of my hand away.. so only 5 fingers remain so 5=10 ( ) 5 what is the sign to be used? :) think
