OpenStudy (ilovecake):

What is the value of the expression 15 + 3 • 4 – 8 ÷ 2? A. 17 B. 23 C. 32 D. 68

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you familiar with the order of operations?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

It is also known as PEMDAS. Parentheses first. Exponents next. MD multiplications and divisions follow in the order they appear from left to right. AS finally, additions and subtractions in the order they appear from left to right.

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

yes

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

So all I do is PEMDAS

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

Okay thank you so much.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes. \(15 + 3 \cdot 4 - 8 \div 2 \) P - there are no parentheses, so go to next step. E - there are no exponents, so move on. MD - there is a multiplication and a division, so do them in the order they appear from left to right. \(15 + \color{red}{3 \cdot 4} - \color{red}{8 \div 2} \) Copy everything exactly as is except do the two operations in red. What do you get?

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

12 and 4

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

3 times 4 is 12 and 8 divided by 2 is 4

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct, but they go exactly where the operations were, so now we have: \(15 + 12 - 4\) Now you go to the last step of PEMDAS, AS, additions and subtractions in the order they appear from left to right. What do you get?

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

so when I add those I get 17. Is that right?

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

I got 23

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

@mathstudent55 Is 23 the answer?

OpenStudy (ilovecake):

Is 23 or 17 the answer?????????????? PLEASE TELL ME I WILL GIVE YOU MEDAL!!!!!!
