My teacher asked us to write and solve an equation for this problem.

Mr.Braun has $75.00 to spend on pizzas and soda for a picnic.  Pizzas cost $9.00 each and the drinks cost $0.75 each.  Five times as many drinks as pizzas are needed.  What is the maximum number of pizzas that Mr.Braun can buy?

x=pizza and y=drinks 
9x+.75y=75 <--- the price $9 for pizzas plus .75 for drinks must add to equal $75 
y=5x <--- 5 drinks for every one pizza 
now solve as a system of equations 
since y=5x we can substitute it into the first equation: 
9x + .75(5x) = 75 
9x+3.75x=75 
12.75x=75 
x=5.88 
the problem is, you can't buy .88 of a pizza, so round down to 5. thus, he can buy five pizzas.
