Try thinking about it this way, if 'm' = the number of med pizzas he bought, and 'x' the number of XL pizzas he bought and 't' = the total spent. If you lay it out something like this, (m*5.99)+(x*9.99)=t and fill in for the information that you already know from the problem you should come up with the answer.
