Any ideas?

You're asking about an event from about 1820-1840. The west as we no it didn't exist. The parts that were settled were untamed frontier. That doesn't sound like a place that would be good for industry. The south was still big into slavery. Think about machines and slaves. Would a society based on slavery be a good place for labor saving devices to be developed? So of the choices left. Think about what was needed. They didn't have electricity. So this industry is going to be powered by water movement turned into energy. (Water wheels) Which region has the more powerful rivers?. Your going to need elevation to make the water run faster. And terrible farmland full of rocks and stuff couldn't hurt. Lots of people willing to give up farming to work in factories.
