Most Indians live in poverty and were discriminated against. However, British investments did increase economic output of the subcontinent as a whole. A few Indians were able to increase their economic status, but most of the economic wealth of India prior to independence went to the British crown. The British excluded Indians from most government positions until the so called "Indianization movement." Most Indians were treated very very poorly. The major exception was the royalty. Remember the British held a high regard for royalty, this included the Indian Maharajahs and leaders of the "princely states."
