My 2 engineering cents: By studying the variation of speed in the waves, one may determine the median acceleration of the waves at a certain point in space and time. Using that and the estimative quantities of water one may estimate the force at which the waves will strike buildings and other objectives and plan/build ahead for them to withstand the impact.

So that our houses can withstand the force of the tsunami
