Well, actually, what you really want to do at the beginning of an essay is just GRAB the attention of your reader - you're shouldn't be looking for words that influence the sequence just yet. :3 That would come in your body paragraphs.

~You can be asking a question related to the topic, but is directed more personally at your audience: "Did you know that..." OR "Have you ever wondered about..." etc. etc.

~or you could surprise your reader by giving a startling fact: "About __% of all __ ...." etc. etc.

~or just begin by making a solid statement: "Since the 1960's, the debate about ___ has greatly increased due to.." etc. etc.

Well, in my opinion the best way to start your introductory paragraph with this prompt (air pollution) would be option 2: a startling stat :3
"We breathe about two gallons of air every minute. On average, air pollution takes one to two years off the typical human life-span''
