Got stuck on this one. In the year 2000, there were 8.7 deaths per 1000 residents in the United States. If there were 281,421,906 residents in the U.S. during 2000, how many people died that year? Best answer will get a medal

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

Okay, here is the proportion (The division slash should probably be written as a fraction bar), 8.7/1,000 = n/281,421,906 (Solve for "n") As you've probably been tought already, you must cross multiply, in order to solve a proportion. First multiply 281,421,906 times 8.7. This should give you 2,448,370,582.2 Then multiply 1,000 times n to get 1,000n. Now, your equation is 1000n = 2,448,370,582.2 To solve, divide both sides of the equation by 1,000. Your final answer is approximately 2,448,371 people. I hope this helped! (-;
