anyone explain this...I just can't figure it out

OpenStudy (welshfella):

I'm not sure what the HL theorem is but if the triangles are congruent it means that the corresponding sides are all equal so we can write x + 4 = 3y + 1 and x = 2y

OpenStudy (welshfella):

you need to solve these 2 equations to get the values of x and y

OpenStudy (welshfella):

to solve them replace x in the first equation by 2y ( as we are given x = 2y in second equn) then solve this equation for y then find value of x from x = 2y

OpenStudy (welshfella):

have you solved 2 equations like this before?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

another way to do this would be to plug in the values of x and y given in the options and see whhich ones fit into the 2 equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2y + 4 = 3y + 1 - 1 = -1 2y + 3 = 3y -2y = -2y 3 = 1y 3/1=1y/1 3 = y ??? is that right??
