Help! MEDAL AND FAN! I WILL EVEN MAKE YOU MY BEST FRINED!
This is an artifact of the Asante people of Ghana. The akua'ba figure is supposed to help pregnancy and ensure safe delivery of a beautiful, healthy infant. After being blessed by a priest, a woman carries the figure around with her and treats it like a real child. She dresses it with beads and earrings, "nurses" it, and puts it to bed. How does this piece of art reflect Asante culture? It reflects Asante humor in making women play with dolls. It gives both boys and girls an entertaining toy to play with. It tells an important story through ancient writing forms. It shows Asante beliefs about birth and female beauty.
