The prism has a volume of 70 mm3. Find the volume of a scaled image with a scale factor of 3.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Multiply each dimension by 3 and find the volume.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 7 x 3, 5x3, and 2x 3???

i got 1890 @mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You are correct. The new volume is 1890 mm^3. Another way of solving this is to realize that when all sides of a solid are dilated by a scale factor of k, the volume changes by a factor of k^3. In your case, all sides are dilated by a scale factor of 3, so the volume changes by a scale factor of 3^3 = 27. 70 mm^3 * 27 = 1890 mm^3
