It is a form of image compression for storage. What you need to keep in mind is what bibby said: lossy. Know what that means?

Ok, if I have the numbers 1, 2, and 3 I have 3 numbers. But what if I just save their average? That is 2. So then I could say, I had 3 numbers and their average was 2. But that does not tll me it was 123, 222, or what. So I have lost some of the information but kept some. That is, basically, what being lossy means. You lose some information.

The goal is to keep enough for the picture to be able to be made out but to lose enough to make it smaller. Also, it is a one way proces so once lost it is gone forever.

np. And the JPEG is an acronym for joint photograpic something group... You can look that part up if you ever need it.
