OpenStudy (j.f):

How many different ways can Gold, silver, and bronze medals be awarded to six different athletes? The multiplication principle states that if there are P ways that the first choice can be made, and Q ways that a second can be made, then there are PxQ combinations. Would this be 3x6= 18?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

hi!!

OpenStudy (misty1212):

six for the gold then five for the bronze then 4 for the silver multiply together via the "counting principle"

OpenStudy (j.f):

how did you know 6 for the gold, five for the bronze, and 4 for silver

OpenStudy (misty1212):

because you have 6 athletes to choose from

OpenStudy (misty1212):

once one has gold, there are 5 left then once one has gold, another silver, there are 4 left

OpenStudy (j.f):

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, that makes sense
