The perimeter of a rectangle is 256 inches. How long are the sides if the length exceeds the width by 16 inches? Mark lets x represent the width of the rectangle and writes the equation 2x + 2(x + 16) = 256. Solving for x, the width of the rectangle is 56 60 68

OpenStudy (academicgurusinc):

So in order to solve this problem you need start compiling everything together. When you simplify the above equation, you'll get 4(x+8)=256. Then you'll distribute the 4 and you'll get 4x+32=256. Now you subtract 32 so you'll get 4x=224 Divide both sides by 4 and you'll get "56" as your final answer. Hope that helps.
