OpenStudy (lulubj):

Larry wants to buy some carpeting for his living room. the length of the room is 3 times the width and the total area of the room is 27 square meters. what is the lenth of the living room?

OpenStudy (lulubj):

length*

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

Ok so we don't know the width of the room so we can call this unknown side "a", and we are given that the relationship between the width and the length is that length is thrice the width (ie. L=3W) and since we called the width "a" then L=3a. We also know that the area of any rectangle (i'm assuming the room is rectangular) is given by A=LW. Since our width is "a" and our length is 3a then the area is A=3a x a = 3a² and we are given that the area is 27m² so then 27=3a². Solving this equation for "a": 27=3a² 9=a² a=3 ("a" really equals plus or minus 3 but since we can't have negative length we ignore the negative case) So now we have found that a=3, which means that W=3 and L=3x3=9. Therefore length is 9 meters. Hope it helps (^_^)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

let the width = x meters then the length = 3x meters the area = 3x*x = 27 find x

OpenStudy (lulubj):

Thanks

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

@lulubj did it help? the answer is 9 meters long btw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you get it tho @lulubj ?

OpenStudy (lulubj):

yeah got it. Thanks (;

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

k. Anytime!!

OpenStudy (welshfella):

area = length * width = 3x * x
