why are there two units of Al in the ionic compound Al2O3?

oxygen has a charge of -2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Al 3- O2+ they want to be electrostatic ally neutral therefore if you have to aluminum ions it would be 6- and if you have 3 oxygen ions it would have 6+ therefore Al2O3
