Differential Equations 8 Online

I need help with undetermined coefficients. I know how to solve these most of the time. Sometimes though (in my class notes) an extra step is used in finding the solution to the particular equation. This step involves determining the value of S, which can be either 0,1, or 2. And I do not understand how to determine what value of S to use. In my notes I have : s=0 :r is not a root S=1 r is a simple root, s=2: r is a double root. I hope all of this makes sense. Any help is appreciated!
